About Windows Server & SQL Server Licensing

Windows Server and SQL Server are licensed per physical core, with minimums that catch many organizations out during a license review. This service supplies Windows Server Datacenter and SQL Server core licenses as annual subscriptions sized to your hosts, together with an entitlement record that maps every license to the servers it covers.

We count your physical cores and apply Microsoft’s rules: at least 8 cores per processor and 16 cores per server for Windows Server, and at least 4 cores per processor or virtual machine for SQL Server. Datacenter edition allows unlimited Windows Server virtual machines on every fully licensed host, and SQL Server Enterprise core subscriptions covering all physical cores of a host allow unlimited SQL Server virtual machines on that host.

Licensing administration is included: procurement, license key and portal management, Windows Server CAL tracking, true-up planning and renewals. Licenses are subject to the Microsoft Customer Agreement and Microsoft’s product terms, and Microsoft price changes may apply at renewal.

Frequently asked questions

What does the price include, and which terms apply?

The Windows Server and SQL Server core licenses and CALs listed in your tier for one year, plus TechSpire licensing administration: procurement, key and portal management, compliance reporting and renewals. Licenses are subject to the Microsoft Customer Agreement and Microsoft’s product terms.

Can we add cores or reduce our commitment during the term?

You can add cores at any time, prorated to your renewal date — for example when a new host is racked. Microsoft only allows cancellations or reductions within its short window after purchase or renewal (currently 7 days), so commitments generally cannot be reduced or cancelled after that until renewal. Our quarterly or pre-renewal reconciliation tells you whether a true-up or a reduction is due.

Are Remote Desktop Services CALs or Azure usage included?

No. Remote Desktop Services CALs, external connectors and Azure consumption are quoted separately. If your licenses are eligible for Azure Hybrid Benefit, we document how to apply them to Azure virtual machines so you do not pay for Windows Server or SQL Server twice.

Will the price change at renewal?

Your TechSpire price is fixed for each 12-month period, whether you pay monthly or annually; monthly billing does not shorten the commitment. Microsoft price changes may apply from your next renewal or anniversary date, and we notify you in writing at least 30 days in advance.
